Step by Step Bible Study of Luke 5: 1-11
How do you move from “just reading” to truly encountering God in His Word? In this study, we are heading out to the front porch to talk about the practical rhythms of Bible study. Using Luke 5:1–11 as our guide, we explore how Jesus meets us in our “ordinary” routines and calls us into the deep.
Whether you are a beginner or looking to refresh your quiet time, these five steps will help you slow down and savor the heart of God.
5 Steps to an In-Depth Luke 5 Bible Study
Based on our Luke 5 Bible Study
- Quiet Your Heart: Start with prayer, reflection, and thanksgiving. Slow down your life so you can hear His voice.
- Read Slowly: Rushing is the enemy of depth. Read the passage slowly to find the “treasures” hidden in the text.
- Research the Context: Look at the “Why” and “When.” (Example: In Luke 5, the Jews had been waiting 400 years to hear from God!)
- Dig Deep (Verse-by-Verse): Journal what you are learning about God’s character.
- Tell Someone: Sharing what you learned helps “lock it into your brain” and encourages others.

Summary: The Wonder of God’s Word in this Step by Step Bible Study of Luke 5. In this passage, the crowd was “pressing in” on Jesus just to hear Him speak. They were thirsty for the Word after 400 years of silence.
Key Lessons from the Study:
The “But” of Faith: Peter toiled all night and caught nothing—a hopeless situation. But at Jesus’ word, he let down the nets. God’s Word stands against every hopeless situation.
The Instant Miracle: What we spend months or years toiling for in our own strength, Jesus can change in an instant with a single word.
Our Response: Peter didn’t just cheer for the miracle; he fell at Jesus’ feet in awe. Our study of the Word should lead us to a better view of who God is and a humble view of who we are.
The Calling: Following Jesus means being willing to leave the “full boats” behind to follow the One who filled them.
Video Transcript: How I Study My Bible (Luke 5 Bible Study)
Introduction Hey guys! How have you been liking summer lately? I have been thoroughly enjoying it, hence why I am currently outside on my front porch. I love summer so much. I saw a video floating around YouTube lately called “How I Study My Bible.” I wanted to show you guys how I’ve recently been studying—I’m just really excited to take you along with me.

If you’ve been here for a while and haven’t hit the notification bell, do that so you can be notified when we come out with new videos. I love you guys; there is a reason you’re watching this video today. I hope and pray that it would encourage you and help you with your Bible reading.
The Essentials We are currently in the Coffee and Bible Time studio right now because it’s time to do some serious Bible study. Here is what I bring to my study time:
- My Bible (I’m using the Illustrating Bible today)
- Some colored pens
- Mini sticky notes (I love putting these in my Bible when I find bits of truth)
- My journal
- An open heart
My 5-Step Process
- Quiet My Heart: This looks like prayer, reflection, and thanking God. I need to slow down my heart because life gets crazy sometimes.
- Read the Passage Slowly: If I could give you one tip, it is to slow down. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve rushed through a study and gotten nothing out of it. If you slow down, you will find treasure.
- Research the Context: I look this up on the internet or in my Bible commentaries.
- Dig Deep: I go verse by verse, journaling out what God is teaching me and what I’m seeing about who He is.
- Tell Someone: I usually tell my mom or my friend Rachel. This really helps get what you learned into your brain and encourages someone else.
The Study: Luke 5:1–11 Step One: Quiet the Heart. “Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that you would help me to teach this passage today. Help me to share what you want me to share. Touch their hearts in a mighty way and show them how powerful your Word really is. Amen.”
Step Two: Read the Passage. (Luke 5:1–11) Jesus is by the Lake of Gennesaret. He gets into Simon Peter’s boat to teach the crowds. Afterward, He tells Simon to “Put out into the deep” for a catch. Despite toiling all night and catching nothing, Simon obeys. They catch so many fish the nets begin to break and the boats begin to sink.
Context & Observation This passage is at the very beginning of Jesus’ ministry. The Jews had been waiting 400 years for a word from God; they were thirsty for a Savior.
In Verse 1, the crowd is literally pressing in on Jesus just to hear the Word of God. Are we that thirsty? We shouldn’t wait until we are desperate to run to God; we should fill up before we become thirsty.
Digging Deep In Verse 4, Jesus tells Simon to let down the nets. Simon gives a disclaimer: “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing.” This was a hopeless situation. But Simon says, “But at your word, I will let down the nets.”
What stands against a hopeless situation? God’s Word. What we spend months or years toiling for in our own strength, Jesus can make happen in an instant. All Peter had to do was obey the small command, and Jesus did the rest.
The Right Response What should our response be? Look at Simon Peter in Verse 8. He fell down at Jesus’ knees and said, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”
- He humbled himself.
- He saw his weakness.
- He had the fear of the Lord.
We should not just worship the miracles or the good things in our lives; we need to praise Jesus, the giver of everything.
The Calling In Verse 10, Jesus tells him, “From now on you will be catching men.” Peter leaves everything—including two boats full of fish that would have been worth a lot of money—and follows Him. God’s Word should lead to complete surrender. When you take the Word seriously, God will lead you into your calling.
Closing Can we just realize how phenomenal God’s Word is? Thank you for watching this far. It shows you are dedicated to wanting to dig deep. At the power of His Word, a hopeless situation can be turned into a miracle. Fall at His feet and worship the Creator.
