Struggles When Starting to Read the Bible
Ellen and Ashley begin by reflecting on the struggles they faced when first starting to read the Bible—from not understanding that the books of the Bible aren’t in chronological order, confusion about the Judaic laws, and unfamiliarity with theological terms. They swap stories and encouragement for those who are in a similar place in learning how to start studying the Bible.
“Even though I didn’t understand a lot of it, God still opened my heart and spoke to me through His word.”
Ashley Armijo
The EASY Bible Study Method Explained
Ashley introduces the “EASY Bible Study Method,” a beginner-friendly framework created to help anyone learn how to start studying the Bible with confidence.
Step one—Enter into the Story—invites readers to slow down, engage their imagination, and picture themselves within biblical narratives to better connect with Scripture and with Jesus.
How to Start Reading the Bible in Context
Ashley emphasizes the importance of studying historical context when starting to study the Bible. Important aspects include:
- Author
- Audience
- Setting
- Time period/historical events
Ashley explains how knowing the author, audience, and historical setting of a book—like the Gospel of John—can deepen your understanding and help you make sense of Scripture, even if you’re brand new to Bible reading.
“The most incredible scholars don’t understand everything. So don’t let that stop you.”
Ashley Krause
Tips for How to Start Reading the Bible
Ashley and Ellen offer practical advice for how to start reading the Bible, especially if it’s your first time or you’re returning after a long break.

3 Ways to Start Reading the Bible
- Read a Few Verses a Day
Take it slow—consider reading just 5 verses at a time. This makes Bible study approachable and easier to stay consistent with. - Use an Easier Translation
Choose a Bible version that’s easy to understand, like the NLT (New Living Translation) or CSB (Christian Standard Bible), especially if older or more word-for-word versions like the KJV (King James Version) or ESV (English Standard Version) feel dry or confusing. - Come Back if You Fall Off Track
If you miss a day (or many), don’t give up. God is always waiting with open arms. Just pick up where you left off.
Bible Reading Next Steps + Book Update
In the final segment, Ashley and Ellen share next steps for continuing your Bible study journey, including joining a group or finding a mentor. They also introduce their new book The EASY Bible Study Method, a practical tool designed for anyone wondering how to start studying the Bible—with guided questions, real-life examples, and encouragement for learning in community.
“If you’re super stuck, get in a group, because that holds you accountable.”
